Is Ottawa's D.J. Smith head the next on the chopping block?

We're not even two months into the 2023-24 NHL campaign, and we already have our second head coach casualty.

Minnesota canned coach Dean Evason November 27 following a seven-game skid and a 5-10-4 record to start the season.

"Our shop, which had Evason as the second-favorite to be fired next (4/1 odds) two weeks ago, today posted updated odds for which hockey coach will be the next to get the pink slip," BetOnline offered.

A pair of Eastern Conference coaches are the favorites with Ottawa's D.J. Smith leading the way and Lane Lambert of the Islanders close behind.  The third shortest odds go to David Quinn of San Jose, but his price is four times that of Lambert.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re winning or losing,” Smith said Tuesday. “This league is a seven-day league. When I say that, seven days ago we won three games in a row and seven days later people are saying we’re the worst team ever. Seven days from now what’s going to happen?"
