San Diego Padres (Major League Baseball)

(July 16, 2023) - The Padres have been underperforming this season as they hovered a few games under the .500 mark as of mid-July heading into the second half of the season.  They were 6 games out of the final wildcard spot in the NL and just got swept by Philadelphia.

ESPN's Alden Gonzalez writes of the disappointing Padres:

The Padres were expected to field one of the most dynamic lineups in baseball history. It's hard not to think that considering the presence of Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts. So far, though, the offense has been their undoing. The Padres somehow rank 18th in the majors in slugging percentage, right between the Marlins and Rockies, and are slashing just .223/.314/.382 with runners in scoring position, producing a .696 OPS that's lower than that of all but three teams in the majors.

Gonzalez adds that the stars are surrounded by a lack of depth.

San Diego State University SDSU Aztecs (College Football)

(July 16, 2023) - 7-6 overall, 5-3 in Mountain West, the Aztecs enter this season once again expected to win UNDER 7 regular season games at -130.

As big a meltdown that SDSU had in 2022 that included a 4th quarter collapse to Fresno State, they still finished with their 13th straight winning season.

San Diego State only averaged under the four-yard mark once since 2009, and last year it averaged 3.96 yards.  But new offensive coordinator Ryan Lindley is expected to get the passing game going.

Three starters return for the Aztecs on the offensive line. They must be able to show improvements with the pass protection and ground game.

The defense should be good.  SDSU finished 16th in the nation for total defense last season and hasn’t finished lower than 21st since 2013.

SDSU Aztecs Make it to the NCAA Men's College Basketball Championship 2023

(July 16, 2023) - UConn started the year unranked. It ended it by beating San Diego State to complete a dominant six-game run to the program’s fifth NCAA championship.

SDSU was not expected to make it this far either.  In the end UConn proved too much for the Aztecs, finishing 79-59.

Keshad Johnson scored 14 points for San Diego State and at one point they came within five.  But the Aztecs only shot 32% from the floor.

“We cut it to five. I think there were people in the stands that thought, ‘Hey, they’re capable of doing it again,’ and we were,” San Diego State head coach Brian Dutcher said. “But we ran into too good of a team.”

San Diego State University will enter their 2023-24 season at 80-1 odds to win the title.
