Turkey Euro 2008
Odds Slashed
Following an
improbable win by
Turkey, their Euro
2008 odds have been
slashed from 20 to 1
now to
Sportingbet
9 to 1. Still
good considering the
performance of this
injury-ridden team.
Turkey won in even
more stunning
circumstances than
against Czech
Republic in their
final group game,
having looked dead
and buried after
Croatia's Ivan
Klasnic had broken
119 minutes of
goalless action.
Croatia boss Slaven
Bilic had run down
the touchline in
celebration but
there was more to
come in a remarkable
finale - Semih
Senturk rifling into
the top corner to
force penalties.
After Luka Modric
and Ivan Rakitic
went wide with their
spot-kicks, Rustu
Recber saved from
Mladen Petric to set
up a fixture in
Basle against
Germany next week.
It also came against
the odds as injuries
and suspension left
Terim with just 15
outfield players and
eight of his
starting XI on a
yellow card.
Turkey coach Fatih
Terim said this week
their greatest
strength was they
never give up but
even he must have
feared it was all
over with a minute
left of extra time
in Friday's Euro
2008 quarter-final
with Croatia.
Turkey coach Fatih
Terim predicted that
there would be "no
limit to success"
for his team after
they beat Croatia on
penalties to book a
semifinal berth at
Euro 2008.
Earlier in the group
stage, the Turkish
team also came back
to beat co-hosts
Switzerland 2-1 and
the Czech Republic
3-2.
"I would like to
congratulate the
Croatia players and
coach. They played
well but that's
football. You should
never give up until
the final whistle,
that's what makes
football
interesting," Terim
said.
"I congratulate my
players, too. Both
sides could have
won. I think we
should be proud and
I still haven't been
able to do any
damage assessment."
"We seem to come
back from the dead.
We always do the
hard thing, not the
easy thing, which
shows how good my
team are. When you
have footballers
like this, you just
don't lose," Terim
said.
