VCU Upset Kansas

Nobody saw this one coming and it was unclear as of Sunday afternoon if anyone had actually placed bets on Virginia Commonwealth to win the Southwest Region, but that is precisely what transpired as VCU upset number one-seeded Kansas.

The payout odds:  150/1 or $15,000 for every $100 bet at SBG Global

“Amazing, truly amazing!” declared Don Shapiro of Gambling911.com, who noted that most online sportsbooks included VCU among its “field” options to win the 2011 NCAA Championship with payout odds that tend to be significantly reduced.  In the case of SBG Global, VCU would actually pay out 10/1 odds with an NCAA Championship.

VCU not only beat Kansas, they did so with a final score of 71-61.

As a result, the number 11-seeded Rams will be heading to the Final Four.

“We knew Kansas was going to make a run in the second half, but we never gave up the lead, and our guys kept fighting,” VCU coach Shaka Smart said after the historic upset.

VCU (28-11) became the first team to win five games, a result of being part of the newly incorporated First Four.

“I can say with complete comfort that nobody had a perfect bracket this year,” joked Shapiro, pointing out that Butler was another Cinderella team entering the Final Four.

“We got prepared well by Coach. He prepared us really well, and we just went out there and executed what he told us to do,” said Jamie Skeen, who led the Rams with a career-high 26 points.

The Rams will meet Butler next weekend in the Final Four.
