Colombia

James Rodriguez, better known as simply James, capped a fantastic group stage by coming on as a second-half sub and notching a goal with two assists as Colombia romped to a 4-1 win over Japan. Jackson Martinez scored twice and Juan Cuadrado opened it up from the spot, but James was the star of the show and it could be argued that the 22-year-old playmaker has been the best player in the World Cup so far. Many gave up on Colombia when it was announced before the World Cup that Falcao would miss out, but James has made everyone forget about his Monaco teammate.

Uruguay

Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 to take second spot in Group D on a goal from Diego Godin in the 81st minute, but of course, the attention was focused on Suarez, who appeared to bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini just two minutes prior to that goal. At the time of this writing, FIFA had announced that they are investigating the incident and Suarez, due to his reputation (this is the third time that he has bitten someone on the pitch), could miss the rest of the World Cup, possibly longer. It takes the spotlight off a Uruguayan team that has disappointed so far in the tournament, even though they did make it to the knockout stage. Even with Suarez in the lineup, as he is still struggling to be fit after knee surgery, Uruguay will have to improve to beat Colombia.

Total

Uruguay won’t want to get into an up-and-down battle with Colombia, who have young legs and a lot of confidence, while Uruguay’s defense has looked old and slow and they may not have made it through the group stage if not for England’s shoddy defense and Italy also looking old. This doesn’t look like an offensive firefight by any means as Uruguay will look to shut down their ranks and hit Colombia on the counter, but it may not make a difference anyway in terms of progressing.
