Debt-Ridden Greece to Award Online Gambling Licenses by Year’s End

Plagued by endless amounts of debt, the country of Greece plans to begin awarding up to 50 licenses to online gambling establishments by the end of this year.  They will also begin allowing allow thousands of low-stake videolotto (VLT) gaming machines by the end of the year, a high level government official confirmed on Monday.  Greece has a population of just over 11 million.   

The nation will follow in the footsteps of other European Union members like France and Italy in an effort to comply with EU policy.  Greece is also looking to raise funds to cover its 110 billion euro EU/IMF bailout.

"The bill is expected to be voted within the first quarter of the year," the official, who has direct knowledge of the government plans, said on condition of anonymity. "Our aim is to tender the licences by the end of the year."
