Lobbyists Are Big (and Only) Winners Thus Far in US Online Gambling Battle

States like New Jersey are not yet seeing the promised revenue numbers for their fledgling Internet gambling sector even though growth appears inevitable.  Likewise, the sites themselves are not exactly going gangbusters (not even NJ market leader PartyPoker). But alas, there is one group benefiting big time from the efforts to both legalize and prevent online gambling from taking shape in the US:  The lobbyists.

Atlantic City Casinos Bring in 15 Percent More From Online Gambling in March

Is the Tropicana Buying the Sands Casino Bethlehem? Rumors Run Rampant

All of Eastern Pennsylvania is abuzz with the news that the famed Tropicana Hotel and Casino, a staple in Atlantic City, could be about to buy the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem.

Poker Pro Phil Ivey Sued by Borgata for Nearly $10 Mil Over Playing Card Scam

Poker pro Phil Ivey is being used by Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel and Casino over an alleged playing card scam.

The suit is asking for $9.8 million claiming fraudulent winnings during a series of visits to the casino in 2012.

Borgata Using High Tech Chips at Spring Open in Wake of Scandal

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Associated Press) — A cheating scandal at a casino poker tournament has led to new security measures, including chips that are more intricate, have more colors and include an authentication element that can be checked under ultraviolet light.

The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa told The Associated Press it was using new chips for its Spring Open poker tournament that began Tuesday.

Atlantic City 2013 Revenue Lowest Since 1989

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Associated Press) - Not even a boost from Internet gambling money and the comparison with an extremely slow period after Superstorm Sandy could prevent Atlantic City's casinos from seeing a big decline in their earnings in 2013.

The casinos saw their gross operating profits decline by nearly 35 percent last year.

The 12 casinos that operated in 2013 - the Atlantic Club shut down in January of 2014 - posted a collective gross operating profit of $235 million, down from $360 million in 2012.

WSOP Circuit National Championship 2014 to be Held at Bally’s Atlantic City

The WSOP Circuit National Championship 2014 will be held at Bally’s in Atlantic City from May 22-24 it was announced this week.  This is the 10th season of the circuit.

With a total of 100 players eligible for qualification, the World Series of Poker today announces how the additional six remaining at-large seats will be awarded.

In May, WSOP.com websites in both Nevada and New Jersey will host an online freeroll tournament in their respective states, where the winner of each tournament will automatically qualify (2 seats total).

United Chicago-Atlantic City Flights Take Off: Online Gambling Can Benefit

Great news for Atlantic City as New Jersey’s seaside gambling Mecca will now have a direct link to Chicago.  United Airlines began offering direct flights between the USA’s second largest city and Atlantic City this week.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently took over Atlantic City’s under-utilized airport and, in doing so, convinced the 3rd largest airline in the US to start offering flights there.  In addition to the daily flight to and from Chicago, United will offer a round trip flight to and from Houston.

Internet Gambling No Jackpot for New Jersey

(Associated Press) - When it comes to raising revenue for the state, Internet gambling has been a bust.

Online gambling has failed to generate most of the tax revenue that it had been anticipated to this year, accounting for roughly half of a downward adjustment to the annual state budget.

Arrests Made in Borgata Credit Card Fraud Scheme

Two individuals have been apprehended following an investigation into a credit card fraud scheme at Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel and Casino.

The New Jersey pair allegedly attempted to fraudulently charge more than $500,000 using stolen account numbers, were arrested early Saturday, March 29, at the Borgata Casino, in Atlantic City.

South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Jason Chaffetz, a Republican from Utah, introduced the Internet Gambling Control Act of 2014 Wednesday morning.  It is a measure that would prohibit all forms of Web gambling in the US at the federal level while enforcing state governments to cease offering the activity as well.

New Jersey Online Gambling Estimates Cut by 7 Percent

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Associated Press) — Morgan Stanley has lowered its estimate of the U.S. Internet gambling market to $3.5 billion by 2017, down from a previous forecast of $5 billion.

The Wall Street firm cited worse-than-expected technical issues, but says it's optimistic about the new industry's long-term prospects, with an $8 billion market by 2020.

It also lowered its first full year estimate of New Jersey's Internet gambling revenue from $541 million to $203 million. Fitch Ratings is sticking with its $200 million forecast for New Jersey this year.

888 Holdings Sees Surge in Share Price

888 Holdings, the online gambling firm, was up 8.6% Tuesday in trading.

The company has reported a 30% increase in pretax profit in 2013, driven by a continued strong performance from its core casino and poker products.

It said that pretax profit rose to USD53.2 million in 2013, up from USD40.8 million the year before, as revenues for the year rose to USD400.5 million from USD375.8 million.

Bill to Allow NJ Licensing of Foreign Internet Gambling Firms One Step Closer

(Associated Press) - A plan to let New Jersey casino regulators oversee foreign Internet gambling companies if they move their operations to Atlantic City has moved a step closer to approval.

A state senate wagering committee approved the bill Monday.

The measure is sponsored by Sen. Raymond Lesniak. He says many overseas gambling companies want the stamp of approval that would come from submitting to New Jersey's casino regulators, who are among the strictest in the nation.

The foreign firms wouldn't be able to take bets from anyone in the United States.

Is New Jersey Online Gambling Driving Down Casino Revenue in Pennsylvania?

Forecasts for online gambling revenue in New Jersey may not quite be reaching targeted expectations but there could be an additional positive impact, at least where the Garden State is concerned.

Neighboring Pennsylvania casino revenues are now on the decline since New Jersey Internet gambling launched last November.

Pennsylvania has severely cut into New Jersey’s brick-and-mortar casino industry for nearly eight years.
