Kentucky Derby 2010 Weather Could be a Muddy Factor

Kentucky Derby 2010 Weather

When it comes to the Kentucky Derby 2010 we must be concerned about the weather.  Storms are in the forecast, some of which may bring torrential rainfall.

Some horses, like Super Saver, run well on sloppy tracks.  Paddy O'Prady, the +1500 long shot at Bookmaker.com, also relishes the rain.

"He loves the wet track; he's really coming into his own," trainer Dale Romans brother, Jerry Romans Jr., said.

The odds of a muddy track for this Saturday's Kentucky Derby are greater than any single horse winning the race at 80 percent.

The National Weather Service says 1 to 1½ inches of rain is possible. If so, that would be the most rain on Derby Day since 1.19 inches fell in 1929. The wettest Derby Day was in 1918, when 2.31 inches fell.

"Depending on timing, this could turn out to be a miserable Derby," said Mike Callahan, a hydrologist for the weather service. "I would say the track is going to be pretty muddy.

To drive home the point about Saturday's weather, a flash flood watch will be in effect for Louisville and surrounding areas from Saturday morning through Sunday evening.

Some races, including the Derby, could be delayed if multiple inches of rain fall within a short period or in the event of lightning, which is forecast as well.  For online sportsbooks like Bookmaker.com this could provide the rare opportunity to expand betting beyond the 6:30 pm EST post up time.

Sites like Bookmaker.com were anticipating a banner betting day with the Derby and Mayweather/Mosley fight later that evening.

Bookmaker.com, the oldest established North American online bookmaker, was offering 8 percent back on both losses and winnings for bets on the Kentucky Derby 2010.
