The 2017 Kentucky Derby is just days away, and the first jewel in the Triple Crown is at stake. It is the time of year that racing horse betting goes into overdrive in the United States and several horses have been tipped as potential winners.

Below are the top 3 horses wagered to win the Triple Crown races.

2017 Kentucky Derby – Top 3 Horses

  1. Always Dreaming +400

Always Dreaming is the favorite going into the Run for the Roses. The horse won the Florida Derby in the build-up to the Kentucky Derby.

And winning that particular race is usually a good sign for prospective Churchill Downs' winners. Always Dreaming's aggressive and strong mentality could be what seals the deal for him on race day.

The horse will be ridden by jockey John Velazquez, a hall of fame rider and winner of more than 5,000 races. Velazquez won the 2011 Kentucky Derby with Animal Kingdom.

It remains his only win at Churchill Downs win. However, compared to the two other favorites, Velazquez is the only one with victory at the Kentucky Derby.

Always Dreaming has won all three of his races in 2017 and his trainers claim the horse feels better than ever.

  1. Classic Empire +450

Always Dreaming just has his nose in front of Class Empire for online bookies, but come race day, the two could be more even.

While Always Dreaming won at the Florida Derby, Classic Empire took home the spoils at the derby in Arkansas. Both races were seen as major pre- 2017 Kentucky Derby outings.

Classic Empire won the 2016 Breeders' Cup with jockey Julien Leparoux, who will ride the horse at Churchill Downs.

While Classic Empire is seen as second favorite, Leparoux has never won at the Kentucky Derby. His highest place was fifth, which he achieved twice in previous races.

Online bookies should think long and hard about the jockey before race day. Leparoux rode the 2011 favorite, Dialed, but only managed eighth place. Classic Empire may be set to fail.

  1. Irish War Cry +600

Irish War Cry won the Holy Bull and Wood Memorial prep races giving race horse betting pundits hope he can upset the favorite. According to horse racing experts, Irish War Cry had the fastest Beyer Speed Figure (101) of any Derby horse in their final race before Churchill Downs.

Despite Irish War Cry's Beyer Speed Figure, Always Dreaming received 121 at the Florida Derby. So, online bookies should be aware, that on his day, Always Dreaming should still be the faster of the two horses.

Irish War Cry is ridden by Rajiv Maragh, whose best finish at the famous race was in 2011 when he finished third on Mucho Macho Man. Perhaps, Maragh's skills as a jockey can make up for any speed Irish War Cry lacks on May 6th.

Irish War Cry was only introduced to Churchill Downs on Tuesday May 2nd after making the journey from Maryland. Only two horses bred in New Jersey have ever won the race, but Irish War Cry will attempt to be the third at the 2017 Kentucky Derby.

The Run for Roses is always the most exciting two minutes in sports, and this year's race should be no different.
