Don't look now but the Alabama Crimson Tide are ranked number two in the nation and appear to be one of the most solid teams in College Football. Yet one can still get the Crimson Tide at +350 odds to win the 2009 BCS Championship for a payout of $350 with every $100 bet (see BetOnline.com for odds).

Good time for a break, points out Yahoo Sports. Alabama's climb to the No. 2 spot in the polls has been meteoric, to say the least. And the Tide survived its worst game of the season with a 17-14 victory over Kentucky.

"We have five games before we have another bye week," said Tide head coach Nick Saban. "I think there are things teams (we'll face and) will do a little different in the next five games. We'll evaluate that, and we'll evaluate personnel and if there are moves we want to make, this is a perfect time to do it, with an extra week to get those players in place whether it's offense, defense or special teams.

"And we can improve on areas where we haven't been as efficient as we need to be, so that's something we can work on. Things like that. We do a quality control study on what we do well and what we've done poorly."

Last year, Alabama started off the season 6-2 then ended it 7-6. This was due mostly to lack of depth, something that is not an issue this year.

Alabama's biggest challenge appears to be the November 8 game verses LSU but the Tigers became gator bait this past weekend, dismantled by Florida 51-21.

The Crimson Tide performed better than most of the top ranked teams last weekend....and they didn't even have to lift a finger.

Their national stock improved because other contenders kept dropping. Of the nation's top four teams, three lost Saturday while Alabama was idle.

As the national landscape continues to clear, the Crimson Tide remains a surprising, yet quite prominent, fixture in the polls, writes Gentry Estes of the Alabama Press-Register.

"If we are improving and we are doing things the right way," Saban said, "then we should be playing our best football in the weeks ahead."
