Calgary Flames Continue to Surprise

The Calgary Flames were not even supposed to make the playoffs, let alone win a first round matchup. The Flames just won’t go away and after beating the Vancouver Canucks in six games they are in the Western Conference semifinals for the first time since 2004. The Flames were 22-19 on the road this season so they are capable of winning away from home. Winning in Anaheim though is another story as the team has not won in Anaheim since the 2006 playoffs. They have dropped 19 straight games in Anaheim. The Flames are led by their top line which features Jiri Hudler, Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. Calgary has a goaltending duo of former Duck Jonas Hiller and Kari Rammo.

Ducks Third Period Magic

The best third period team in the NHL continued their magic in the first round as they came back to win each of their first three games against Winnipeg after trailing in the third period. Anaheim led the NHL during the regular season with 12 victories when losing after two periods. The Ducks are the first team in playoff history to win three games in a row when trailing after two periods. The Ducks have been led in the playoffs by Corey Perry who has 7 points in four games. Anaheim didn’t rotate goalies in the first round as it was all Frederik Andersen.

Iowa State: Are They The Underdogs To Look For In March Madness?

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
