Michael Phelps, the huge -5000 favorite to win a second gold medal on Monday - did just that while China maintained its lead in terms of overall gold medals for a country.

Bloomberg News reported that Jason Lezak overtook Alain Bernard of France with his final stroke to win the 400-meter freestyle relay for the U.S. team by .08 second and keep Phelps on course to surpass Mark Spitz's one-Games record of seven gold medals in 1972.

``It was unbelievable,'' Phelps told reporters at the Water Cube pool after winning his second gold medal at the Beijing Games. ``Jason in the last 50 meters was incredible.''

The relay win helped give the U.S. 12 total medals, while China took the lead with 14, including nine gold medals. China was the favorite to take home the most golds while the USA came in with just shy of even odds at most online gambling websites.

2008 Summer Olympics betting in Beijing took on a life of its own heading into Monday with heavy world action coming into online sports books the likes of SBG Global which caters extensively to the North American marketplace and Sportingbet.com with its stronghold in Europe, Asia and Australia.

SBG Global had odds on Men's basketball matchups (some of which are listed below as of press time) and baseball.

Iowa State: Are They The Underdogs To Look For In March Madness?

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
