While the online sportsbooks have begun offering betting odds on the 2010 Winter Olympics, the odds are against NBC making any money.

Dick Ebersol, chairman of the network's sports division, said on Sunday that the cost of broadcast rights to the Vancouver games will exceed the network's advertising sales.

The sales picked up only in recent months.

"We are on track to do the same numbers that we did in Torino and Salt Lake City games," Ebersol said. "Rights have gone up and this will be the first time in my doing these Olympics that NBC will lose money, but it's not because of the ad sales."

Meanwhile, Sports Interaction.com, an online sportsbook based out of Canada, just released odds on Alpine Skiing and Curling along with Which Country Will Win The Most Medals (Germany being an even odds favorite).

The online gambling websites enjoyed unusually strong results with the 2008 Summer Olympics thanks mostly to the gymnastics events and Michael Phelps.

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
