That sets up some tantalizing matchups this weekend between the best college basketball teams and players in the country. ACC membership makes up 31.3 percent of the Sweet 16, so it’s safe to say that it is the best conference in America.

The ACC, Big Ten and SEC have three-quarters of the teams in the field, but there is only one matchup between conference foes. No. 1 seed Duke takes on No. 4 Virginia Tech in an East Region semifinal. Tech won the regular season matchup facing a Zion-less Blue Devils team. Things will be different this time around, especially with the Dookies feeling like a team of destiny after their near-miss against UCF.

No. 12 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers

Date and Time: Thursday, March 28, 2019, 9:57 p.m. ET

Location: KFC Yum! Center, Louisville, KY

Opening CBB Odds: Virginia -8.5, O/U 119.5

Oregon vs. Virginia TV Coverage: TBS

A national championship won’t erase what happened to the Cavs last season when they became the first No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16. But that first-round loss to UMBC fueled a season that has seen UVA lose just three games. And once again the Cavs are one of the strongest defensive teams in the country. In fact they are the best, giving up just 55 points per game.

The difference this season is that the team can score and has the ability to come back. They did that in the first-round, fighting back from an early 14-point deficit to Gardner-Webb, avoiding another embarrassment. And they advanced with little help from second-leading scorer Kyle Guy, who shot 4 of 23 overall and made just one of 15 three-pointers in the two games. “It shows how deep we are and how much none of us really care about scoring,” Guy said.

Getting points from Guy will come in handy against a Ducks squad that clamped down against Wisconsin and UC Irvine in the first two rounds. Oregon allowed 54 points in each game and won by an average of 18.5, extending their winning streak to 10. An early season slump following the loss of Bol Bol cost the Ducks, who were 15-12 before their run. But they realized that they are still a good team and cruised through the Pac-12 tournament with a ton of confidence.

Kenny Wooten was swatting everything in sight against UC Irvine totaling seven blocks. He has at least four blocks in each of the last four games and is a monster defender. Points will be hard to come by, that’s why the total opened at 119, and with the Ducks getting 8.5-points on the college basketball betting line, that’s too good to pass up.

NCAA Tournament Score Prediction: Virginia 67, Oregon 63

No. 4 Virginia Tech Hokies vs. No. 1 Duke Blue Devils

Date and Time: Friday, March 29, 2019, 9:39 p.m. ET

Location: Capital One Arena, Washington, DC

Opening CBB Odds: Duke -7.5, O/U 144

Virginia Tech vs. Duke TV Coverage: CBS

There will be some familiarity in this game with the teams sharing the same conference and having played once already during the season. But the Hokies will get introduced to future No. 1 NBA draft pick Zion Williamson. The Hokies were one of a few teams to beat the Dookies this season, but they didn’t have to face Zion in that contest. The freshman phenom was sidelined with a knee injury after his shoe blew out. How much does he mean to the club? Well, counting the game he got hurt, the Devils went 3-3 in Williamson’s absence.

Overlooked is the fact that the Hokies were without one of their top performers for that game. Justin Robinson missed 12 games and returned for the Tournament. He looked sluggish in the first game making 2 of 7 shots for nine points against St. Louis. Getting his legs back, Robinson was more active against Liberty scoring 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting.

Tech is a better team with Robinson in the lineup. Duke is a great team with Zion on the floor. VT’s Kerry Blackshear had a big game in the first meeting, but he’ll have to contend with Williamson in the block and points won’t come as easily. The Devils felt lucky to beat UCF and given a reprieve, they aren’t going to blow it.

NCAA Tournament Score Prediction: Duke 79, Virginia Tech 70

Sixers? Knicks? Who Can Challenge Boston in the East this Season?

As the new NBA season gets underway, there is most certainly a sense that the Boston Celtics are the team to beat once again. The 18-time champions really took an “if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it” policy in the offseason, and it’s hard to argue with the tactic.
