Horse Racing Odds – 2021 Preakness Stakes Longshots

If we learned anything from the Kentucky Derby it’s that longshots are a factor in every race. Going off as the sixth favorite with 12/1 odds two weeks ago, Medina Spirit outlasted the field to capture the blanket of roses. Things are different for the 146th running of the Preakness Stakes with Medina Spirit positioned as the betting favorite. While the race has returned to its normal spot on the calendar there is more talk about the controversy surrounding legendary trainer Bob Baffert and the Derby winner, who tested positive for an illegal substance after the race.  Baffert will not be at Pimlico Race Course this week but Medina Spirit was cleared and will attempt to snag the second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. While the field currently consists of 10 horses, there are several capable of pulling off an upset. Let’s take a closer look at a few who could emerge victorious on Saturday.  Bookmaker.eu offers a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1600).

In the immortal words of Reese Bobby, Ricky’s dad from the movie Talladega Nights, “If you ain’t first you’re last.” And technically, any horse that isn’t the favorite is a longshot. That means Concert Tour, who is right behind Medina Spirit on the odds board could be mentioned in this article. Along with Midnight Bourbon they are the only horses in the field of 10 that currently have shorter than 10/1 odds. But I’m not going to do that because we want an upset special.

With the field half of what we saw at the Kentucky Derby the chances of an upset decrease. Ram is the longest shot on the board and is running his first stakes race. There are other more experienced horses in the field that actually have a fighter’s chance. Below is a list of the current odds with the longshots listed first.

Longshot Odds to win 2021 Preakness Stakes

Ram +3300
France Go De Ina +2000
Risk Taking +1600
Unbridled Honor +1600
Keepmeinmind +1600
Rombauer +1200
Crowded Trade +1000
Midnight Bourbon +500
Concert Tour +275

There’s always an appeal with longshots in any sport since everyone loves an underdog. And rolling around in your winnings after nailing that pick is a vision we all have when betting the ponies. Oddsmakers and handicappers usually get it right though, that’s why they do what they do. And there is plenty of money involved so they better get it right. They don’t always and that’s the beauty of gambling. Here are a few horses that can upset the oddsmakers and make you some coin in the process.

Past performance has everything to do with why certain horses are listed further down the odds board. Unbridled Honor is a perfect example. He won his maiden in February and finished fourth at the G2 Tampa Bay Derby a month later. Most recently he earned some respect with a second in the Lexington Stakes last month where he flashed one of the top speed figures in the slop. He’s a pace-setter that needs ideal conditions and some luck. Luis Saez takes the saddle and gets the most of speed horses. Also, trainer Todd Pletcher seeks his first Preakness win and has an outside but good chance of getting it.

Keepmeinmind isn’t getting a lot of respect after his off-the-board finish in the Kentucky Derby. But he did have a strong finish coming from last to take seventh making up around nine lengths. Known as a closer he finally showed why after two troubling starts this year. He finished sixth in the G2 Rebel Stakes and was 16 lengths off the pace for fifth at the Blue Grass Stakes. He showed signs of life in Louisville and offers value at his current price.

As the third favorite - or seventh longshot - on the board Midnight Bourbon stands out. He got behind the pack at the Derby and finished sixth, the first time he failed to finish among the top three. He typically runs well when setting the pace and the smaller field should allow him to do that. He also has a favorable starting position from the fifth stall. If any horse is going to upset the top two favorites it’s likely going to be Midnight Bourbon. But when it comes to the ponies you just never know.
