Medina Spirit continued to maintain the favorite position at 9-5.
Medina Spirit and two other horses from trainer Bob Baffert were given three rounds of blood sample testing in recent days as a condition of competing in this weekend's races. This is due to Medina Spirit having had double the legal amount of betamethasone in his system following his Kentucky Derby win. Baffert, who later claimed his horse was being treated for a fungal infection at the time, declined to appear at the Preakness Stakes.
The controversy is sure to overshadow Saturday's race as Medina Spirit seeks to win the Triple Crown.
“There’s 10 horses in the race, and all 10 guys have put in a lot of sweat equity to get here,” said Michael McCarthy, who will saddle Rombauer for the Preakness. “Unfortunately, with what’s going on in the bigger picture of things, that’s what people will gravitate toward. But it doesn’t affect me on a day-to-day basis.”
