What Side/Total Has The Edge?

The UNDER

What We Like:

  • Eight of the last ten meetings have gone UNDER the current number of 9.5
  • Arizona having tough time against right-handers
  • Most of the action (65%) is on the OVER
  • Robbie Ray has pitched well but is desperate for his first win

What We Don't Like:

  • Hate that the total is moving from 9 to 9.5
  • The bullpens for either team: Both rank among the ten worst right now

Eight of the last ten meetings have resulted in totals going UNDER the current 9.5.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (0-1, 4.64 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Tyler Chatwood (0-0, 6.00)

Ray is winless in four starts despite allowing three hits or fewer in each of his first three outings. That's in large part because the 27-year-old has issued 15 walks in 21 1/3 innings, which has prevented him from pitching deep into games. Ray is 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA in four starts against the Cubs, but he is looking for his first win at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs shuffled to rotation to line up Chatwood's first start of the season against the Diamondbacks, who have struggled against right-handers. It also allowed the swing man to stretch out a bit more, so he should be able to give Chicago 75 to 80 pitches after starting the season in the bullpen. Chatwood is 5-3 with a 4.37 ERA in 12 games (10 starts) against Arizona.

The UNDER is 19-7 in the Chicago Cubs last 26 home games.

The UNDER is 6-1-1 in the Diamondbacks last 8 games following a win.

It should be noted that the OVER is 5-1 in Chatwood’s last 6 starts overall.

The Diamondbacks are 1-7 in their last 8 Sunday games.

We will give the UNDER a 55% chance here but stop short of making this one an official pick due to the weak bullpens.  We anticipate a solid performance from the starters however.
