Drew Brees Era Over: Two Battling for Starting Position
With Drew Brees retiring there isn't a whole lot to be excited about in New Orleans this season, or so it seems. The oddsmakers still have the Saints midway at 35-1 to win the Super Bowl.
The OVER/UNDER for the Saints is 9, a reflection of this team's strong offensive line and one of the better running backs in the league, Alvin Kamara.
Brees was not the only departure. The front office lost one of its top executives in former pro personnel director Terry Fontenot. Brees long time quarterbacks coach, Joe Lombardi, is out too.
Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill are each looking to prove why they should be the Brees replacements. Both are looking good during the preseason.
Winston made a strong case for himself starting in Monday night's preseason football game against Jacksonville whereby he completed 9 of 10 passes for 123 yards and two deep touchdown throws. All of this occurred in the first quarter of a 23-21 victory.
"I haven't started a football game in so long, I was so excited to just get an opportunity to start and lead the pack, man," said Winston, who made his first start with the Saints, since there was no preseason when he first joined the team in 2020. "The rhythm was great, offensive line was phenomenal and we had guys like Quez making plays all night. You gotta love that."
Winston also quickly added, "As we all know, we've got another game next week."
