Saturday's Starting Pitcher Matchup
PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (5-2, 4.08 ERA) vs. Rays RH Yonny Chirinos (6-1, 2.91)
Gibson is coming off one of his best starts after holding the Chicago White Sox to one run and five hits while striking out nine over seven innings to earn a win last Saturday. The Missouri product has surrendered three or fewer earned runs in seven of his last nine outings and owns 60 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings. Gibson lost at Tampa Bay last season but breezed through eight innings at home against the Rays on July 12, striking out nine and yielding one run.
Chirinos could get the start or take the mound following an opener, as he has is six of his 11 appearances. The 25-year-old Venezuela native got the start on Monday against Toronto and struck out seven in five hitless innings to earn the win. Chirinos made one appearance against Minnesota during his 2018 rookie campaign, allowing two runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings without factoring in the decision.
Minnesota is 2-6 in Gibson’s last 8 starts vs. Tampa Bay.

Friday's Starting Pitcher Matchup
PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Jose Berrios (7-2, 3.20 ERA) vs. Rays RH Ryne Stanek (0-1, 2.97)
One of three Minnesota pitchers with seven wins on the season, Berrios picked up the victory last time out against the Chicago White Sox after allowing four runs (one earned) and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old Puerto Rican has been reached for 13 runs over his last three turns and has struggled in his career against the Rays, posting an 0-2 record and 8.44 ERA in three starts. However, Tampa Bay's current roster is batting a collective .211 against Berrios, who will be pitching on six days' rest.
Stanek allowed one hit over two scoreless innings against Toronto on Tuesday, marking the 10th time in his last 12 appearances while serving as Tampa Bay's opener that he has not surrendered a run. The former first-round pick has been superb in 12 appearances at Tropicana Field, sporting a 0.50 ERA (six runs lower than on the road) while holding opposition to a .161 batting average. Stanek made two appearances against the Twins in 2018, striking out five and giving up one run in three innings.
The Twins are 7-1 in their last 8 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
The Rays are 5-0 in their last 5 games following a win.
