Thursday's Starting Pitcher Matchup
PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Justin Verlander (9-2, 2.27 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Tommy Milone (1-1, 3.60)
Verlander defeated Oakland in his last turn as he gave up one run and four hits over eight innings. The 36-year-old, who is limiting opponents to a .147 batting average, has registered 2,809 career strikeouts and needs five to pass Hall-of-Famer Mike Mussina for 20th place on the all-time list. Verlander is 13-9 with a 3.24 ERA in 26 career starts against the Astros and has routinely shut down Encarnacion (4-for-35, two homers).
Milone will be making his fourth start for the Mariners and has yet to make it through six innings. The 32-year-old has recorded 19 strikeouts and issued four walks in 15 innings while allowing fewer than three earned runs in each of his outings. Milone is 1-2 with a 5.74 ERA in nine career appearances (seven starts) against Houston and has yet to retire Jake Marisnick (3-for-3).
Monday's Odds
The total has been at 9.5 with a few wobbles to 10. The line has mostly sat around -130 favoring Houston but we have seen this one as low as -123.
Monday's Starting Pitcher Matchup
PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Corbin Martin (1-1, 5.51 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Wade LeBlanc (2-2, 6.99)
Martin answered a sterling nine-strikeout performance in his major-league debut by posting an 0-1 mark with a 6.55 ERA in his last three starts. The 23-year-old has surrendered a homer in each of his four trips to the mound, with three leaving the park in 3 2/3 innings of a no-decision versus the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Martin's command has dissipated since this debut on May 12, as he has allowed eight walks in his last three outings (11 innings).
LeBlanc has struggled in his three starts since returning from a strained right oblique, posting an 0-2 mark with a bloated 10.22 ERA. The 34-year-old, however, showed promise in Wednesday's no-decision against Texas, as he did not walk a batter in five innings and kept the ball in the park after permitting six homers in his previous two games. LeBlanc received a no-decision in his last outing versus Houston on April 12, yielding two runs on a season-high eight hits before exiting after 4 2/3 innings.
