Boxing Odds – Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley

Put a YouTube personality in the ring with a former UFC champion and you get one of the most highly anticipated and intriguing boxing matches of the year. Jake Paul looks to remain undefeated in his brief boxing career and is the favorite in this cruiserweight battle with former UFC welterweight belt holder Tyron Woodley. Stepping out of the octagon, Woodley looks to redeem all mixed martial artists who venture to the ring. This fight has been in the works since Paul scored a first round TKO over Woodley’s good buddy Ben Askren back in April.  Betting on it is available here.

Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley Fight Preview

It’s hard to determine what exactly is going on with Paul. He seems to be taking his newest career adventure seriously, though, but this will be a step up in competition. He started his boxing career against fellow YouTube personality AnEsonGib, moved on to former professional basketball player Nate Robinson and most recently scored a first-round TKO over mixed martial artist Ben Askren.

The fight with Askren was viewed as a measuring stick since Paul was actually competing against someone with experience in the ring, though it wasn’t a boxing ring. Paul was a -155 favorite in that bout and ended it in less than two minutes. Paul has yet to fight anyone with a boxing background and now with three fights under his belt he does have an advantage in that regard over Woodley, who makes his debut in the ring after stellar MMA career.

Given that Paul is the more experienced boxer, oddsmakers pegged him as a bigger favorite ( -195 ) against Woodley. A veteran inside the octagon, Askren was never known as a big puncher. If Paul is serious about continuing his boxing career he will have to pace an opponent that’s actually a threat at some point. Many believe that time has come.

Though Woodley is getting his first taste inside the boxing ring he’s quite familiar with the competitiveness of fighting. The only issue I have is that the former champ has apparently lost some of what made him great. He had a great run through the welterweight division in the UFC, winning the belt in 2016 with a KO of Robbie Lawler and successfully defending the title four times.

All of that was part of a string where Woodley was unbeaten over a span of five years. He lost the belt by unanimous decision to Kamaru Usman in March 2019 and hasn’t won since. The once solid punches failed to land, seemingly hindered by a shoulder injury sustained in a bout with Demian Maia in 2017. He bowed out of the UFC unceremoniously with a submission loss to Vicente Luque in March.

It’s not to say Woodley doesn’t have what it takes to be successful in the ring. But he is nearing 40 and dropped his last four fights inside the octagon. Maybe he just needs something different and this certainly is different. And there’s no arguing his ability to throw damaging punches. Seven of his 19 professional MMA wins came via KO.

Paul has been surprisingly good even if the competition hasn’t been the best. He’s still a raw boxer, but he gained traction by knocking off Askran in his last fight. This is a different story, however. Woodley has an iron fist and will wait for the right time to unload. On the flip side Woodley has been stopped just once on punches and that was early in his career. He can take a punch with the best of them, which is something that will offset the youth and boxing edge Paul has. Woodley had a skirmish with Paul and his handlers before the Askren fight setting the stage for Sunday. That added incentive could be what it takes to get Woodley back in the fighting spirit.
