Current Governor in opposition
A host of online sports betting sites are currently available to South Dakota residents and visitors alike including Bovada, Jazz and BetOnline. And soon one may be able to enjoy the full service experience at one of the state's most popular destinations.
South Dakota voters will decide whether to allow sports betting in Deadwood after the House on Tuesday March 2, 2020 passed a proposal to put the question on the November ballot.
Voters must decide on a change in the state's constitution. In the past they have come through in favor of expanded gambling. In 2014, 57 percent of voters passed an amendment that made it possible for keno, craps, and roulette to be played in Deadwood.
If South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem had her way, this proposal wouldn’t see the light of day. She opposed a similar initiative last year. And Noem is not the only one in opposition.
“We’ve been on this journey where we’ve just embraced gambling,” said Rep. John Mills, a Volga Republican. “I just wonder when is it going to end?”
If passed, tribal casinos would also be permitted to offer sports betting.
