The Good in 2022
Let's start with the good.
Congrats Hawaii on winning the 2022 Little League World Series championship.
They opened this season with 10-1 odds, a payout of $1000 for every $100 bet.
The Little League World Series this year drew a massive audience and plenty of wagering.
This year's Little League World Series averaged 294,000 viewers across ESPN and ESPN2, up 19 percent from last year and up 21 percent from 2019.
Hawaii beat Curacao 13-3 on August 28, helped along by back-to-back homers from Kekoa Payanal and Kama Angell in the first inning.
In six games, Hawaii won all of them. The closest margin was four runs and Hawaii outscored opponents 60-5.
“We’re fortunate that everything clicked at the right moment,” Hawaii Manager Gerald Oda said. “I’m very grateful that these kids played loose and relaxed.”
Now for the Bad
Rainbow Warriors fans may be in for a long season after losing to a Vanderbilt team favored to win no more than three regular season games in 2022 in Week 0 at home.
The Commodores Mike Wright lit things up, throwing for 146 yards on 13-of-21 passing without an interception.
The Rainbow Warriors posted 358 total yards. Quarterbacks Brayden Schager and Joey Yellen combined to threw for 250 yards on 28-of-55 passing. Jonah Panoke caught seven passes for 101 yards.
“This first game I know these guys were excited to play. Their intentions were in the right place and they played pretty good coming out the gate and (over) time things started to happen and the result is what it is and so for me it’s back to the drawing board,” Hawaii first-year coach Timmy Chang said.
Hawaii is basically starting from scratch. Head coach Todd Graham resigned after multiple reports surfaced of player mistreatment on January 14, 2022. There was also a mass exodus of players.
NFL
Media outlets over the years have suggested that the San Francisco 49ers tend to have the most fan representation in Hawaii among NFL watchers. That might make sense being that San Francisco is one of the easiest states to travel to from Hawaii.
The LA Rams have forged a connection in Hawaii through significant outreach and seek to capture that fan base.
