College Football to Start in January 2021?

University of Arizona President Dr. Robert Robbins says he doesn't see college football starting on time and instead points to a scenario he is hearing more and more: football and basketball both being played January through March 2021.

"I'm really concerned about whether we're going to be playing football in the fall," Robbins told KVOI-AM in Tucson, Arizona,. "My sense, right now, I just don't see that happening."

"We're waiting to see what the NCAA does, what the Pac-12 does," Robbins said. "As much as I want it, you know, it just seems as though if we do play any football in the fall, it's going to be delayed because I've heard nothing and we're headed to May 1. My hope is we're going to get some clarity on this very soon, but it seems unlikely to me. I'd love to see it happen, but we're waiting every day to get some guidance.

"What I've been hearing more of is that maybe doing something combining both basketball and football for the spring, so January-February 2021, and try to play both of them," Robbins said. "There will be all kind of implications for television viewing and confusion. I don't know. We just don't have any answers right now."

To be clear, Dr. Robbins appears to be in the minority, at least when it comes to cancelling the season entirely.

After weeks of uncertainty surrounding the upcoming college football season, 99 percent of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors polled by Stadium believe a season will be played in one form or another.

“Given the medical and governmental leadership opinions, it is reasonable to believe some compromise to the start of the season lies ahead,” a Power Five AD said.

Sixty-one percent of the ADs predict the season won’t start until October or November, while 14 percent think the season won’t begin until the spring semester in January or February.
