Conor McGregor Under Investigation for Alleged Sexual Assault

UFC star Conor McGregor is accused of a sexual assault in his native Ireland, according to a report by The New York Times.  The news comes less than 24 hours after McGregor, 30, abruptly announced his retirement from the UFC via social media.

The alleged sexual assault of a woman occurred back in December in a Dublin, Ireland hotel.  He was arrested and released after questioning the next month. He has not been formally charged with or convicted of a crime, and the investigation, which is ongoing, does not represent proof of allegations. Irish media have reported on the case for months but are barred by law from naming a suspect in sexual assault cases before a conviction.

According to the report, Irish police are not saying whether McGregor is the suspect of the investigation at this time.

"This story has been circulating for some time, and it is unclear why it is being reported now," Karen Kessler, a spokesperson for McGregor's legal team, told ESPN.

The news comes just weeks after McGregor was arrested for assault in Miami Beach.

McGregor is money when it comes to sports betting.  His bout with Floyd Mayweather, Jr was the most wagered on event in history while a fight last year versus Khabib Nurmagomedov was the most bet on UFC event ever.
