Civil Forfeiture Targets in B.C.'s Biggest Money-Laundering Case Deny Wrongdoing
Paul King Jin and spouse Xiaoqi Wei have filed responses to a B.C. Civil Forfeiture Office suit to seize cash and assets potentially totalling more than $8 million, including houses and a Porsche, in what is British Columbia’s biggest money laundering case.
The civil forfeiture office alleged in its lawsuit, filed this spring, that the assets and $4.86 million in cash seized in police raids in 2015, including in a gun safe in a bedroom in a luxury Richmond condo, are proceeds of crime.
Both argue the lawsuit should be thrown out.
Jin and Wei also argue in their response that searches that led to the seizures of cash and documents were a violation of their Charter rights to protect them against unreasonable searches and seizures.
“In response to the claim as a whole, the defendant pleads that at any and all material times, the manner in which the defendant has been investigated by police, along with the process by which such investigative fruits have been forwarded to and accepted by the director of civil forfeiture, was all in contravention of the defendants (charter) rights,” Jin’s lawyer, Bibhas Vaze, stated in the response.
