Atlanta Sports Teams Back Sports Betting

Georgia is one of the least friendly states when it comes to gambling, yet their four professional sports franchises are now pushing for wagering right in the stands from one's mobile phone.

From Forbes.com:

The Big Four: the Hawks, the Falcons, the Braves, and United want you to really get behind your team by betting on them. It would lead to deeper fan engagement, they say. You would care more because that’s your money you are setting a match to with every bet. The four teams want the Georgia Legislature to make gambling legal in the state.

There is so much money going offshore, or to Vegas, the teams say why not keep it in the state and feed it to the Georgia Lottery, and better fund education? Gambling is now legal in all 50 states and Georgia needs to cash in, the teams declare.

These four teams are now lobbying the state government to pass gambling legislation.

They want mobile wagering but have agreed not to install betting kiosks in arenas or stadiums.

The Hawks, Braves, Falcons, and United are lobbying for it as a way to fund the the Hope Scholarship.

Ray Glier of Forbes writes:

But for all the community good the professional teams do in Atlanta, this is one that has a chance for bad public relations and a stain.

The teams give millions in money and a lot of time to charity. They do a lot of good, but the teams cannot say for certain they will not make new gamblers out of Georgians. It might not be their problem, but it will be somebody’s problem.

The betting would be done by phone and only on “stats” the teams approve. The professional leagues all have guard rails on the type of bets that can be placed.

Betting on college sports would be prohibited as part of the initiative the Big Four are pushing.  This means no wagering on Georgia's beloved Bulldogs.
