No team has ever come back from a 0-3 deficit to win a NBA playoff series. Right now all the Portland Trail Blazers are trying to do is win a game.

The Golden State Warriors have shown that no lead is safe as they rallied again after trailing by double-digits at halftime to take a commanding lead. Maybe the Blazers should try a different strategy, like falling behind at the intermission so they won’t squander a big lead. The result will likely be the same since no team closes out a series like the Dubs. They can do that with a win on Monday night in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final.

Odds Analysis

Silencing Houston in the previous round was a statement the Warriors were proud to make. They felt relieved after that series knowing that their path to the Finals became much clearer. No disrespect to the Blazers but they aren’t in the same weight class, and the Dubs have proven that. The Warriors have swept five playoff series since Steve Kerr became their coach, and they are 17-7 in potential close-out games. Like I said, no team finishes a series stronger than Golden State.

The fact that they led by 15 points at halftime of Game 3 and had an 18-point lead in the second quarter of Game 4 shows that the Blazers can play with the Warriors. And they’d be leading the series if those games were 24 minutes long instead of 48. But Portland has had a major problem matching the intensity after the break and it’s been costly. The Blazers avoided elimination twice to beat Denver in the previous round, but they’ve been outscored 91-63 in the three third quarters of this series.

Warriors

The loss of Kevin Durant was the opening Portland needed to possibly win the series. The Blazers didn’t count on everyone else, including what was thought to be a suspect bench, pick up their game. The Dubs might play their first close-out game of the series without the services of Andre Iguodala, who exited the previous contest with a calf injury and is listed as questionable. Losing players hasn’t affected the team yet, and I doubt it will for Game 4. The Warriors have more superstars they can just run at you and a bunch of role players who are eager to show what they can do.

Stephen Curry broke out of his shooting slump at the right time. Or was it the injury to KD that thrust Steph back into the spotlight? Either way, Curry is on fire and the Warriors are feeding off his positive energy. Curry went for 36 in Game 3, Draymond Green added a triple-double, and the bench contributed 33 points in the 110-99 comeback victory. The Dubs also put together another strong defensive game holding Portland to 40 percent shooting.

Trail Blazers

Even with Damian Lillard at 100 percent the Blazers would have a hard time beating the Warriors. Now that we know he’s been dealing with a rib injury, I guess that explains the shooting woes. Lillard won’t use that as an excuse, and he hasn’t. But let’s be honest, with Dame shooting 5 of 18 and scoring 19 points in Game 3, it has to be a problem. The Blazers have other problems to deal with as well. Starting the second half of a game with a sense of urgency would be one.

Like all Portland players, Lillard has been ineffective in the third quarter. He’s shot just 3 of 14 overall and 1 of 4 on three-pointers in the third this series and the Blazers have been blitzed 91-63. Lillard is averaging 20.3 points per game in the series, but he’s just 15 of 46 from the field while committing 14 turnovers. Without Dame putting up better numbers, the Blazers might as well make their offseason plans now.

The Warriors are just machine-like and it doesn’t matter who’s on the floor. Portland blew its chance to get back in the series and they saw just how devastating the Dubs can be when they are focused. The loss of Durant and now possibly Iguodala has them locked in. And what’s worse for Portland is that the Warriors know they can come back from a large deficit and there’s nothing the other club can do.

NBA Playoff Score Prediction: Warriors 112, Trail Blazers 105

Sixers? Knicks? Who Can Challenge Boston in the East this Season?

As the new NBA season gets underway, there is most certainly a sense that the Boston Celtics are the team to beat once again. The 18-time champions really took an “if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it” policy in the offseason, and it’s hard to argue with the tactic.
