Current Sports Betting Climate in Florida

The US Supreme Court ruled to allow sports betting nationwide but individual states will determine whether they want to operate in-state sportsbooks or not.

The tribes hold all the cards in Florida - or at least most of the cards, we will get to that in a moment.  The powerful Seminoles are not quite ready to pull the trigger on sports betting just yet.  They would have to be in the mix.

And Disney also has a say.

These two made for unusual bedfellows the last election, together getting an initiative on the ballot that requires voters to decide on any future expansion of gambling in the Sunshine State.  Disney does not want gambling at all.  The Seminoles want to maintain their monopoly.  Both are counting on the voters to say NO to future expansion.

Sports betting most certainly would come under the classification of expansion.  This would suggest that we will be going through at least another year (2020) without sports betting in Florida.  Nothing is going on the ballot this election cycle.

Why This is Good for Bookies and Agents

  • Bookmakers at this time have limited competition but have the added advantage of increased mainstream exposure to sports betting.
  • No matter where you go in Florida, you will find a region that lives and breathes sports, more specifically college football.
  • Though College Football reigns supreme in the Sunshine State, it is Tampa Bay that sits in the spotlight this year.  They have the Rays competing in Major League Baseball and the Lightning favored to win the Stanley Cup.  Even the Bucs in the NFL stand a better chance of winning the league championship game than both the Hurricanes in College Football and Dolphins in the NFL.
