Nets star point guard Kyrie Irving fell on top of Bradley Beal and suffered a knee sprain in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 113-107 loss against the Wizards.

The Nets revealed that Irving has a medial ligament sprain in his right knee and will be re-evaluated in one week.

Irving dedicated Friday’s game to Kobe Bryant. Irving broke several records after leading the Nets to a 133-118 win against the Bulls that night. He went off for 54 and pointed to the sky honoring Kobe before leaving the court.

His 54 points are his new season-high. Irving scored 50 points in a 127-126 home loss against the Timberwolves in the season opener on October 23.

After the game he said: “Hit a few shots in the first half, I had to keep it going, Kobe mentality. Mamba Mentality. Keep going, keep going.”

Kyrie Irving made all his 10 shots in the first half and was 19-for-23 in the evening. His four missed shots are the second-fewest in a 50-point game. Only Wilt Chamberlain had fewer misses after scoring at least 50 points. Chamberlain had 53 points on 20-for-23 from the field in a 160-122 76ers win against the SuperSonics on December 20, 1967.

Some of Irving's teammates also contributed against the Bulls. Spencer Dinwiddie had 20 points in 30 minutes off the bench and Taurean Prince scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds on 6 of 12 shooting.

With his 54 points on 19-for-23 from the field and 7-for-9 from 3-point range, Irving is now the only player to score more than 50 points on at least 80.0 percent from the field and 70.0 percent from beyond the arc since 1983. Irving shot 82.6 percent from the field against the Bulls. The only players in league history to drop 50 points or more and shoot that well are Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan and now Kyrie Irving.

Sixers? Knicks? Who Can Challenge Boston in the East this Season?

As the new NBA season gets underway, there is most certainly a sense that the Boston Celtics are the team to beat once again. The 18-time champions really took an “if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it” policy in the offseason, and it’s hard to argue with the tactic.
