Major League Baseball Betting: Most Profitable Teams 2019
The Major League Baseball season is heading into the final weekend with only one division still up for grabs. The St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers have both clinched a playoff berth but depending on what happens this weekend one will enter the postseason as NL Central Division Champs and the other as a wild card team.

With the MLB season coming to an end it’s a great time to look back and see which teams made the most money for bettors. In our next article, we’ll look at the teams that cost bettors a hefty chunk of their bankroll. All records are inclusive of Thursday action:
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BETTING: MOST PROFITABLE TEAMS
As with most sports, the teams that end up being big moneymakers for bettors in baseball are ones that exceed expectations. The Oakland A’s won’t catch the Houston Astros atop the AL West but they’ve got the inside track for a wildcard playoff berth. Oakland won +15.8 units at home (third best home performance on a per unit basis) and a solid +9.6 units on the road (fourth best in MLB). They scratched out a small profit of +5.2 units against righthanders (#10 in MLB) but dominated southpaws earning +20.2 units against lefthanders—they were the most profitable team against LHP in the Majors by a wide margin.
One of three MLB teams to earn more than 20 units for bettors, the AL Central Champion Minnesota Twins did their best work on the road. At home, they lost -6.1 units but were the most profitable visitor in baseball earning +28 units on the road. Of course, it’s hard to go wrong with a 53-25 record in any situation. Minnesota also had a very pronounced performance discrepancy between left and right handed pitchers. Against RHP they led the Majors with +21.9 units but they’re barely in the black against lefthanders earning just +0.1 unit.
The Atlanta Braves won the NL East and won more than 20 units for their ‘financial backers’. At SunTrust Park they earned +6.6 units but had the #3 road profit/loss in baseball putting +13.9 units in bettors’ bankrolls. They were also profitable against both lefthanders and righthanders—they earned +5.2 units against southpaws and +15.3 units against right handed starters.
NEW YORK YANKEES +17.1 UNITS
The Yankees have had plenty of on-field success over the past few decades but their status as a ‘public’ team often hurts their betting results. This year, they defied the (overinflated) odds to earn +17.1 units for bettors. Most of the profits came at Yankee Stadium (+13.1 units) with just 4 units of profit on the road. They’re in the black against both right handers and left handers—against RHP they’re +12.1 units and +5 units against LHP.
LOS ANGELES DODGERS +14.3 UNITS
No team earned more money at home than the Dodgers—they banked +17.8 units of profit at Chavez Ravine. That more than compensated for a -3.6 unit loss on the road. They had a similar split against lefthanders and righthanders. The Dodgers lost -6.2 units against LHP but were the second most profitable team in baseball against righthanders earning +20.4 units.
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS +10 UNITS
The final double digit unit winner in baseball is the San Francisco Giants. The five teams we’ve discussed above all won 96 or more games to date. The Giants, on the other hand, are 77-82 on the season. They were weak at home where they’ve lost -9.8 units but have made a ton of money on the road. The Giants’ road record is just 3 games over .500 but that’s good enough for +19.8 units of profit and the second best road profit/loss in baseball. They were profitable against both LHP and RHP but just barely—they’ve earned +9.8 units against right handers but just +0.2 units against southpaws.
