PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Caleb Smith (0-0, 3.60 ERA) vs. Braves LH Sean Newcomb (0-0, 0.00)

Smith began his season with a solid performance in a no-decision on Monday against the New York Mets, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out eight in five innings. The 27-year-old made 16 starts in his first full major-league season last year, posting a 4.19 ERA and 1.241 WHIP while averaging 10.2 strikeouts per nine frames. Acquired from the New York Yankees in November 2017, Smith gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings to lose his only turn against the Braves last campaign.

Newcomb continued to struggle with command in his season debut Monday against the Chicago Cubs, walking four and throwing 91 pitches (49 strikes) in four innings, but did not surrender a run in a game Atlanta would win 8-0. The 25-year-old issued 15 walks over 21 frames in spring training after going 2-9 with a 3.90 ERA and 1.329 WHIP over 30 starts in 2018. Newcomb dominated the Marlins last season, winning all four starts while allowing two runs in 24 innings and recording a 1.000 WHIP.
