Looking to make up for races lost due to the COVID-19 outbreak, NASCAR’s adjusted schedule has drivers and teams in North Carolina for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, the first of two races in a four-day span at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It’s also the third race in 11 days since drivers returned to the oval. The coronavirus hiatus didn’t temper any feelings among the drivers. There was a pair of hotly contested races at Darlington with Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin taking the checkered flag in those. The Coca-Cola 600 is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and will air on FOX.  Betting on this event is available at Bookmaker, which offers a generous welcome bonus with a maximum of $1000.

NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600
Date and Time: Sunday, May 24, 2020, 6 p.m. ET
Location: Charlotte Motor Speedway, Concord, NC
Opening NASCAR Odds: Kyle Busch +400
Coca-Cola 600 TV Coverage: FOX

It’s been quite the reboot for NASCAR with two fantastic races at Darlington ushering in the post-coronavirus schedule. And like any good ole car race they weren’t without controversy. Kevin Harvick edged the pack to claim the checkered flag at the Real Heroes 400. On Wednesday, Denny Hamlin earned his second victory of the season at the rain-shortened Toyota 500 with help from Kyle Busch. With Chase Elliott set to take over the lead late in the race he was nudged by Busch causing Elliott to crash and eliminating him from contention. Busch said he “misjudged” the gap while the two were battling for position.

Sunday’s race is not only a test of speed it’s a test of endurance. Drivers will navigate the 1.5-mile quad oval Charlotte Motor Speedway track over 400 laps. At 600 miles it’s the longest race on the NASCAR schedule and will present drivers with varying conditions over the course of the race due its early evening start time.

Coca-Cola 600 Preview

We don’t know yet if Kyle Busch will face any consequences from his actions on Wednesday. Rubbing out Elliott paved the way for teammate Hamlin to become a two-time winner this season. Busch had a strong showing finishing second after a disastrous run on Saturday when he placed 26th. Busch has been and will be a busy man. Not only did he compete in the last two Cup Series races, he also ran the Xfinity Series race on Tuesday and is in the middle of a stretch of seven races in 11 days.

Success at Charlotte is a major reason why Busch is the favorite. He won the Coca-Cola 600 in 2018 and has placed among the top three in three of his last four starts. He led the race for 79 laps last year before falling to third behind Truex and Joey Logano. Busch has yet to win a Cup Series race this season, but he went 2-3 in two races before the season was suspended.

And talk about owning a track, Truex has done that at Charlotte and it looks like he’s finding a groove. His best two finishes of the season came in the last two races and he heads to what is arguably his best track. Truex led for 392 laps to claim victory in 2016 and returns as the defending champ after edging Kyle Busch and Logano last year. Tack on a win at the 2017 BofA 500 and three of Truex’s 26 career Cup Series wins have come at Charlotte.

Keep an eye on points leader Logano. He has value at his current price and has been one of the hottest drivers this season. He won twice before the shutdown and rallied for sixth at the Toyota 500. He’s never won in Charlotte but he gave Truex a run last year.

Also, as far as longshots go I’m sticking with Erik Jones. He has just one top-10 at Charlotte, which is why the odds are steep. But he just ran one of the toughest tracks to finishes of eighth and fifth and even led for 27 laps in Wednesday’s race. He’s a confident driver with a big payday.

Bet Coca-Cola 600 at BookMaker

It’s a busy stretch for drivers with a bunch of races packed into a short time. Busch even ran an Xfinity Series race last week and has to be exhausted following the fiasco with Elliott. I’m fading the favorite and leaning toward Truex to continue his dominance, though it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hamlin or Kevin Harvick back in the winner’s circle.

Coca-Cola 600 Odds Pick: Martin Truex Jr.
