A showdown between two of the top teams in the Western Conference takes place Wednesday on ESPN when the Los Angeles Clippers visit the Phoenix Suns. Both clubs enter the contest with 43 wins, the second-most in the NBA behind Utah, and are separated by just one game in the standings. The Suns have surprised a lot of people with their play this season, but two of their setbacks have been delivered by the Clips, who go for the season sweep while looking to even things up in the West.  Bookmaker.eu offers a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1600).

Odds Analysis

The Clippers missed a chance to gain ground on the leaders with a humbling 120-103 loss to the Pelicans on Monday night, putting an end to their four-game winning streak. You could almost see that coming after they overcame an 11-point deficit to barely get by Houston and nipped Portland by a point in two of their last three victories. The Clips are 1-3 ATS in their last four outings, but wins in 11 of their last 13 games where they are 8-4-1 ATS has them in position to take over the lead in the conference. The Suns closed out trip against the top clubs in the Eastern Conference with a 118-110 payout win over the Knicks giving them a 3-2 SU and 2-2-1 ATS record. They beat Milwaukee, Philly and New York while losing to Boston and Brooklyn. All in all it was a successful trip and Suns are back home where they own a 23-9 SU and 20-12 ATS record.

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers will play this game without the services of Kawhi Leonard, who’s out with a foot injury. And they could be impacted by Paul George’s ankle problem, which played a role in his performance in the Big Easy. George scored only nine points on 3 of 11 shooting falling well below his season average. After the game George said his ankle is “sore right now.” He also said he should be ready to go on Wednesday night. That’s a plus for the Clips since George scored 39 points in a 112-107 win in Phoenix and had 33 points earlier this month in a 10-point win over the Suns. LA covered the closing line in both games and is 4-1 SU and ATS in the last five meetings between the teams.

Dipping into the buyout market the Clips signed veteran DeMarcus Cousins for the remainder of the season. Cousins had an impactful first game scoring 16 points with 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks against the Pelicans. “He’s done a great job incorporating me and my talents and making me feel a part of this,” Cousins said of coach Tyronn Lue. The Clips hurt themselves in the loss turning the ball over 19 times while making just 14 of 45 three-pointers and shooting 40 percent from the field overall. That’s unlike them and I doubt that poor play continues in Phoenix.

Phoenix Suns

If you still were not taking the Suns seriously, their recent trip through East should change your mind. But you probably should have been convinced long before that. The Suns proved last season inside the bubble that they have pieces in place. Adding a veteran like Chris Paul to the young core expedited the process of becoming a threat. Paul made all the plays down the stretch to help Phoenix conclude its trip with a winning record. He scored the team’s final seven points with a pair of clutch shots ended any chance of a Knicks comeback.

The Suns opened their trip with wins over the Bucks and Sixers before falling to Boston and Brooklyn, giving them consecutive losses for the first time since a three-game slide in late January. While they average 114.3 points for the season the offense has been silenced in a pair of losses to the Clippers with an average of 105 points. And they are dealing with injury issues of their own. Key reserves Jae Crowder and Dario Saric are expected to miss the matchup.

You don’t want to poke a sleeping bear and the Suns did that in the last meeting talking trash to George. PG13 responded like a grown man dropping 33 points LA’s win. The Suns have a special place in George’s heart and I expect he’ll be ready to throw down on Wednesday. And I certainly don’t anticipate George and the Clippers playing as poorly as they did in LA with so much on the line. The Suns might be a contender but they’ll have to earn respect. And I don’t think the Clips are ready to give it to them.

NBA Score Prediction: Clippers 115, Suns 111

Sixers? Knicks? Who Can Challenge Boston in the East this Season?

As the new NBA season gets underway, there is most certainly a sense that the Boston Celtics are the team to beat once again. The 18-time champions really took an “if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it” policy in the offseason, and it’s hard to argue with the tactic.
