The championship games will be set following the completion of Sunday’s divisional matchups. The Kansas City Chiefs are still looking for their first Super Bowl appearance since before the 1970 merger, and they were happy to see the Patriots eliminated last week. Kansas City and New England played an epic overtime contest in last season’s AFC title bout. The No. 2 seed Chiefs open their postseason against Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans, who advanced with a gritty overtime win over Buffalo in the Wild Card Round. Does Aaron Rodgers have another Super Bowl run in him? We’ll find out in the late game when the Green Bay Packers make their return to the playoffs after a two-year absence to take on the Seattle Seahawks.

Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs Preview

Kansas City got a gift with a first-round bye thanks to the Pats’ loss to the Dolphins in the regular season finale. Now, the Chiefs need to take advantage of the opportunity. They certainly won’t be overlooking the Houston Texans, who trailed nearly the entire game before squeaking out an overtime win over Buffalo last week. And the Texans have a dynamic quarterback just like KC. Watson willed his team to victory showcasing his skills and ability to extend plays. It looks like Will Fuller is on track to play this week in a move that will open up the Texans offense. While all the talk will be about the QB battle between Watson and Patrick Mahomes, both defenses have come up big down the stretch.

Stopping opponents was the Chiefs weak link earlier in the year. However, the group stiffened over the last two months of the regular season. Over their last six games they allowed just 87 rushing yards per game and yielded an average of 11.5 points per contest. They also went 5-0-1 ATS in that span. As good as the defense has been the Chiefs are still about Mahomes and the offense. The reigning MVP had another strong season throwing for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns with the seventh-best passer rating.

Houston had a hard time slowing down Josh Allen, who threw for 264 yards. Not known as a flashy team on offense, the Bills amassed 425 total yards with 172 coming on the ground. The Texans stiffened stopping four drives inside their 25-yard line forcing four Buffalo field goals. They might not be as fortunate this week against Mahomes and his stable of playmakers. Houston’s 29th ranked pass defense will certainly get tested by Mahomes and his troops. And after watching Allen pick them apart it’s hard to imagine the MVP not having similar results. The Chiefs displayed a more balanced attack down the stretch and their ability to move the football will stress Houston, and eventually the Texans will crack.

Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers

There are a number of factors in play for this matchup. We talked last week about the Seahawks being fearless on the road. They went ahead and slammed the Eagles, though they had to deal with Josh McCown for a majority of the game and not Carson Wentz. Still, Seattle improved to 8-1 overall on the road this season, covering as a 1-point dog in the 17-9 win to go 6-2-1 ATS. The Packers were one of three NFC clubs to win 13 games by getting seven of those victories on the frozen tundra, the most in the conference. The Packers ended the regular season winning five straight and opened as a 3.5-point favorite.

This hasn’t been a typical year for Rodgers, but the Packers won a lot of their games so it isn’t a big deal. Twice in the last three outings he completed less than 50 percent of his throws and his season percentage of 62 was his second lowest since becoming a starter. He lacks a big play receiver, though Davante Adams has come close. Despite missing four games earlier in the season, Adams caught 97 passes for 997 yards and five scores. Over the last four games the Pack averaged 21.8 points and never topped 23 in a game.

Aaron Jones will test the Seahawks after watching them surrender over 161 yards per game on the ground over their last five. The Packers turned to the ground more in the last month of the season with Jones rushing for nearly 110 yards per game with five scores. He tied for the NFL lead with 16 rushing touchdowns during the regular season. Seattle did little on the ground against Philly last week, but that won’t stop them. Look for Marshawn Lynch to get more attempts. As good as Wilson has been over his career, he and the Seahawks have stumbled in Green Bay, Wilson is 0-3 as a starter at Lambeau Field and Seattle has dropped eight straight on the Packers home field.
