If it wasn’t for the National Football League and its decision to go ahead with the draft on April 23-25, there wouldn’t be much in the sporting world to talk about. And for the deprived bettors who need to throw down on something other than esports and table tennis, the chance is here. The 2020 NFL Draft offers an abundance of propositional bets, which are a bonus to the betting public that’s been sports-starved for nearly a month.
Higher profile players entering the draft typically get more attention from oddsmakers when it comes to prop bets. That’s the case this year for Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, who apparently overcame an injury near the end of last season that cost him the remainder of the year and nearly his career. Tua is offered on a number of props at BookMaker.eu and we’ll examine some of those here.
What NFL Draft Pick will be used on Tua Tagovailoa?
Third Overall Pick +175
Fifth Overall Pick +200
Second Overall Pick +400
Fourth Overall Pick +900
Sixth Overall Pick +900
Any Other Pick +900
Tagovailoa entered the 2019 season as the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick. He was having an outstanding year until getting hurt, ending any chance of the Tide reaching another CFP title game. And we also didn’t expect Joe Burrow to put together the record breaking campaign he had leading LSU to the National Championship.
Those two circumstances put a damper on Tua’s chances while moving Burrow to the top of the quarterback draft heap. The Bengals appear to be a lock to take Burrow with the No. 1 pick. Washington used a first round pick on Dwayne Haskins last year and added Kyle Allen in a trade. The Skins also have Alex Smith looking to make a return, so a QB isn’t high on their list.
The third pick is the favorite on the board and Detroit is likely planning an exit strategy for Matthew Stafford. There are more pressing needs and I could see the Lions flipping that pick. But if the order stays the same the Miami Dolphins will be salivating at the chance to grab Tua with the No. 5 pick. A lot can and will happen before the draft, but for now the Fins with the fifth pick look like the best bet.
You can piggyback this prop with the over/under on Tua’s draft position or you can hedge your bet. The line is set at 3.5 with the under currently a negative odds favorite at -110. We could easily see a team in need of a QB make a deal for the No. 3 pick or the Lions could go that direction. Sticking with the fifth pick would be a winner on both bets, though.
Second Quarterback Drafted
Tua Tagovailoa -500
Justin Herbert +350
Jordan Love +1200
Joe Burrow +2200
Any Other Player +2000
For a lot of the reasons mentioned above Tagovailoa is the overwhelming favorite to be the second quarterback off the board. The race for the top overall selection would have been much closer had Tua stayed healthy last season, but even that’s no guarantee he would have held onto his preseason status.
Burrow is NFL-ready and the Bengals cleared room for him. Heck, even this franchise cant screw this up, can they? While the odds strongly suggest Tagovailoa as the second QB taken in the draft, it isn’t a clear cut proposition. Nothing ever is in the draft. A video was constructed of Tua working out showing he’s progressed from the hip injury. That’s nice, but teams want to have a face-to-face with potential picks and those meetings aren’t taking place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The only player with a decent chance of jumping Tua on the board is Justin Herbert, who improved his stock with solid pre-draft workouts. However, Herbert didn’t do enough to surpass Tagovailoa on any of the mock drafts, and nearly 90 percent of the reputable experts have him as the second player taken.
