The NFL on Tuesday hired David Highhill as its first ever executive dedicated to facilitating business in the legal sports betting market.

Highhill has been employed with the National Football League for ten years where he most recently worked as the VP of Strategy and Analytics since December 2018.

"It's a growing market, it's grown a lot in the last three or four seasons," Highhill said of the legal sports betting market in the United States. "What's ahead is the exciting part of the opportunity."

Advertisements for betting companies like DraftKings, FanDuel and Caesars aired during NFL games for the first time last season while the league continues to forge partnerships with gambling conpanies.

More Than One Third of New Hampshire Sports Betting Done By Massachusetts Residents - With Massachusetts legislators working feverishly to legalize sports betting and hopes to get something passed by July 31, New Hampshire numbers indicate just how much money the commonwealth may be losing.

More than a third of the New Hampshire sports betting handle at DraftKings wagered on the 2022 Boston Celtics‘ playoff came from Massachusetts residents.   Sports gambling is legal in New Hampshire with DraftKings for all practical purposes running a monopoly in that state.

DraftKings reported that 28% of its New Hampshire bettors ahead of Super Bowl 56 had Massachusetts addresses as well.

NC Mobile Sports Betting Looks Dead - North Carolina lawmakers have until the end of this week to pass legislation that would allow mobile sports betting.  The process has been met with some resisistance.  Despite efforts to appease opposition by raising the tax collected on sports bets from 8% to 14%, the North Carolina mobile sports betting bill fell short in the House.

The biggest concern centers around a potential rise in gambling addiction. Rep. Pat Hurley expressed as much.

"Conservative estimates suggest North Carolina can expect to see tens of thousands more of our state’s citizens and their families being victimized by gambling addiction. What some people don’t even think about [it] adds to our social service budget."

Those numbers sit around 30%.

Currently North Carolina allows sports gambling only on the premises of two tribal casinos.  One of those sportsbooks operates at the Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort, and the other is Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel.
