PGA Tour Picks – Memorial Tournament Odds

The PGA Tour is thriving after the season restart following the COVID shutdown. Now the Tour gets its top draw back on the course with Tiger Woods scheduled to peg it up for the first time since February at the Memorial Tournament. Woods has won this event a record five times and has been cautious about his return. The inactivity – save for a charity stint in May – and a stellar cast of characters dropped Tiger well down the odds board. Tournament host Muirfield Village Golf Club underwent changes after the Tour played here last week. Collin Morikawa topped Justin Thomas in a playoff to take the Workday Charity Open, but the track will have a different look. Length was extended, fairway rough was grown and the greens will be faster. Patrick Cantlay returns as the defending Memorial champion though others are priced at shorter odds. Odds Analysis

A quick look at the current odds chart shows you just how competitive the Memorial should be. Though McIlroy has struggled by his standards since the reboot, the No. 1 ranked player in the world is jostling for position at the top of the list with notables Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas.

The way DeChambeau has played spanning the shutdown it seems like a given he’ll finish near the head of the class. Prior to the lockdown he posted a trio of top-5s with a runner-up showing at the WGC-Mexico. He opened T3-T8-T6 after the hiatus and was only missing a victory among his run of fine play. He got that last time out shooting 23-under to capture the Rocket Mortgage Classic. DeChambeau took last week off and backers hope the good vibes didn’t go with him.

McIlroy also skipped the Workday to clear his head after he admittedly made some bad decisions. He pocketed a T11 last time out at the Travelers, his best showing since the restart, and heads to a place he’s enjoyed success. He’s never won the Memorial, but he does have four top-10s and would love to put that MC from last year behind him while cleaning up his act this season.

Does Morikawa have an edge over the field after taking the prize last week? It’s hard to go back-to-back and some of the best are on the roster this week making the task more difficult. Cantlay is back to defend his Memorial title getting warmed up for the challenge with a T7 last week. Over his last 12 rounds at Muirfield Cantlay has a 68.33 scoring average.

Memorial Tournament Preview

The biggest tournament of the season to date has brought out the big guns. You know it has to be special if Tiger comes out of hibernation. If he’s capable of playing and doing so at a high level it’s hard to see Woods not playing here since he boasts a record five titles. He hasn’t won since 2012 and his best finish in four starts since that last win is ninth. As much as I’d like to see Tiger own the course it’s hard to imagine with his inactivity and the quality of the field.

There are so many great golfers competing that you could put names on a wall and toss a dart to pick a winner. You’d have a good chance of being right. I don’t see a longshot winning like 80/1 Daniel Berger did at the Schwab. Berger is competing as are all tournament winners since the restart. 

The player that stands out the most, though, is DeChambeau with his intimidating tee shots. He’s so far ahead of the field that his game around the green just has to be average to keep him in contention. If it’s better than average he’s looking at another victory. It’s easy to say he’s a better golfer now than when he won the Memorial in 2018, which is scary for the field.

There are some good golfers down the list that offer up a nice payday should they rise to the top. Kevin Streelman (+5050) followed his runner-up at the Travelers with a T7 last week, and he’s been solid at Muirfield with a T4 last year. Ian Poulter, Patrick Reed and Matt Kuchar are priced for a hefty payout.
