UFC President Dana White teased at the notion during a UFC 240 press conference, indicating that McGregor could step in should something happen to Poirier.

“Yeah, I talked to him last week, he wants to come back.” White said about McGregor. “Really what he’s doing is looking to see how everything plays out in September. I was just thinking out there, as of right now ... Khabib and Poirier are fighting. You know how this business works: anything can happen and usually does. So I think he’s just sort of waiting to see how it all plays out and does he have an opportunity somewhere to jump in and make something happen.”

Khabib is actually the least reliable when compared to Poirier.  If anything were to happen forcing McGregor to step in, there's a good chance he'll be taking on Poirier, not Khabib.

But Poirier has had to pull out of a fight in the past.  That occurred with UFC 230 when he could not fight due to a hip injury.

So far, BetOnline has not posted odds on McGregor-Khabib or McGregor-Poirier for UFC 242, but keep watching.

This strong round put him tied for fifth place, just five shots behind the leader, Scottie Scheffler.
