The rematch has been a long time coming but it’s finally here when the lightweight bout between Dustin Poirier (26-6) and Conor McGregor (22-4) headlines UFC 257 from Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. To get fans and the betting public primed for the main event 11 other fights are on the ticket, including what promises to be an entertaining five-fight main card.  Bookmaker.eu offers a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1000)

Arguably the sport’s biggest star, McGregor returns to the Octagon for the first time since a TKO of Donald Cerrone last January at UFC 246. He had planned on multiple fights last year but remained sidelined partly due to COVID. The main event figures to be a much tougher fight than the first encounter, which McGregor won by TKO in the first round. For one, Poirier has been more involved in the octagon and he’s thrived as a lightweight going 10-2 since the setback to McGregor. Another sign of McGregor’s popularity is his position on the odds board. Over the last few weeks he’s gone from a -260 favorite to -330 currently. There isn’t much value backing the Irishman, but throwing down on Poirier, who is a much different fighter than the first encounter, could yield a hefty payday.

We could go on about the main event since there is plenty to discuss. But let’s touch on some of the other fights. Former Bellator champion Michael Chandler (21-5) makes his debut in the octagon in a lightweight bout against Dan Hooker (20-9) in the co-main event. One of the best fighters outside UFC, Chandler has the opportunity to immediately emerge as a contender in the division while Hooker looks to stay on the fringe of contention.

A main card duel between Matt Frevola (8-1-1) and Ottman Azaitar (13-0) shows off the depth and talent of the lightweight division. Azaitar was 11-0 with seven first round finishes before making his UFC debut. His first two UFC bouts didn’t make it out of the first round either.

Dustin Poirier (26-6, 13 KOs, 6 SUBs) vs. Conor McGregor (22-4, 19 KOs, 1 SUB)

McGregor deserves to be favored in this bout after stopping Poirier in the first round of their initial encounter. McGregor is lightning quick with power in both hands and lethal kicks. The only problem is that he hasn’t fought much allowing the rest of the division to catch up. And Poirier has certainly done that since the first meeting. The move to lightweight has been a boon to his career going 10-2 since his loss to McGregor. One of those setbacks was to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is the most dominant fighter in the promotion. Poirier experienced a brief run as interim champion following a decisive win over Max Holloway. Poirier needs to be on the defensive to push the fight into the later rounds. If he can do that his odds of winning increase since McGregor isn’t as good in the second half of his fights.

UFC Pick: Conor McGregor / TKO / 2nd Round

Michael Chandler (21-5, 9 KOs, 7 SUBs) vs. Dan Hooker (20-9, 10 KOs, 7 SUBs)

While the winner may not get an immediate shot at the lightweight title, there’s plenty at stake for both fighters. Chandler climbs inside the octagon for the first time after dominating Bellator with three lightweight title runs. The division is stacked at the top with Chandler emerging as another threat should he prove victorious. Hooker is 7-2 since moving to the division with impressive wins over Gilbert Burns, Al Iaquinta and Paul Felder. He lost a decision to Poirier in June in a hard fought battle and he has chance to climb back up the ladder with a win.

UFC Pick: Dan Hooker / KO / 2nd Round
