Villanova - Phil Booth scored 20 points and defending NCAA Tournament champion Villanova held off Saint Mary's in a hard-fought 61-57 victory on Thursday night.

Purdue - Carsen Edwards scored 26 points and third-seeded Purdue coasted to a 61-48 victory against Old Dominion on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Predictions

Winners and Whiners: "This one is going to be a war between a pair of teams that fought through tight, low scoring affairs. Purdue is a little deeper than Villanova, who literally played just six players in their win over Saint Mary’s. Cremo played all of three minutes in the contest while all five starters logged at least 30 minutes. Paschall logged 39 minutes, Bey played 38 and Booth 36: that’s not a good sign for a game with a quick turnaround. The Boilermakers have a bit more experience on their side and that works for them. Look for Edwards and company to come up with the win and advance to the Sweet 16."  Prediction: Purdue Boilermakers -4

College Football News: "Purdue can’t hit free throws. It struggled all year, and it hit just 12-of-18 against ODU.  The problems at guarding the three are going to be extra problematic. This is a flawed Villanova team, and it’s not the one of the last few seasons, but it knows how to pull a slew of rabbits out of its hat.

"The Wildcats won’t get killed on the boards, but in the end, they’ll move on because they’ll make more free throws and come up with a few more threes in what should be a fun up-and-down scoring battle."

Action vs. Line Movement

Nearly 70% of the early action was on Villanova.  Some books were moving the line from -3.5 to -4.  More trending towards the -4 and especially the -4.5 we may pull the trigger on Purdue even though Sagarin is suggesting the line should only be Boilermakers -2.

Line

Purdue is the -4 favorite here

Sixers? Knicks? Who Can Challenge Boston in the East this Season?

As the new NBA season gets underway, there is most certainly a sense that the Boston Celtics are the team to beat once again. The 18-time champions really took an “if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it” policy in the offseason, and it’s hard to argue with the tactic.
