In-State Apps Coming Soon?
Legislation to legalize widespread sports betting in North Carolina -- through online providers and a handful of sports betting lounges at pro sports facilities -- “narrowly passed” the state Senate last year and “appears poised to pass” the House in ’22, according to a front-page piece by Murphy & Wright of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER.
The state only allows sports betting at a single casino in Cherokee.
The current bill “allows for at least 10, but no more than 12," online sports wagering operators to “accept sports wagers in the state.”
The lottery commission would “be in charge” of issuing the licenses at a cost of $500,000 per license.
College Basketball is Hot
The Tar Heel State has one of the most rabid college basketball fan bases in the nation.
Duke had the second shortest odds of winning the 2022 NCAA Men's College Basketball Championship at 10-1 heading into February while the state's beloved UNC was coming in at 80-1 odds.
Wake Forest, Davidson and NC State are three other major nationally recognized programs in college basketball.
Charlotte also has its own college basketball team.
