On Thursday November 18, 2021 it was revealed that five Maryland casinos have been granted permission to offer sports betting with actual bets to be accepted some time after the start of the MLB season in 2022 and perhaps prior to the NBA Playoffs.  Individuals looking to place bets on the Super Bowl and March Madness can still do so with local bookies or internationally licensed sportsbooks (sometimes referred to as "offshore books").  One such company, BetUS, has been in business since 1994.  They are also endorsed by your friends at Gambling911.com.

The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission gave its blessing to Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore, Live! Casino & Hotel in Hanover, Hollywood Casino in Perryville, MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill and Ocean Downs Casino in Berlin.

The casinos are among 17 gambling entities granted permission to apply for Maryland’s in-person sports betting licenses, along with certain off-track betting facilities, bingo halls and racetracks.

Will I Bet Able to Bet on the Terps From Maryland?

There is an interesting pattern emerging in the Northeast that extends all the way into Virginia.  None of the states in this region currently offering sports betting allow wagering on in-state schools or games that feature them.  Pennsylvania is the closest state that does.

Here is a breakdown of those that don't across the US and most are in the Northeast and Northwest.

Connecticut

Delaware

District of Columbia

Illinois

New Hampshire

New Jersey

New York

Oregon

Rhode Island

South Dakota

Virginia

Washington

There are no indications yet as to which way Maryland will swing.

A state like Ohio, which is yet to legalize sports gambling, would likely follow the trend in the Southeast where college football and, to some extend college basketball and places like North Carolina, are king.  Pennsylvania with Penn State and Villanova (Basketball) is also home to a substantial college sports fan base.
