Italian Serie A soccer championship, or “calcio” as italians call it, was suspended in the 26th matchday of the 2019-2020 season, with no other than mighty Juventus as league leader. However, this hasn’t been the “typical” Juventus season so far, and other teams, like Internazionale in the beginning, or Lazio, more recently, have been threatening the chance of success for the team to achieve their main goal of this season, which is to win their 9th consecutive Serie A title.

To put things in perspective the last time Juventus did not win the title, was in 2010-2011 season, when AC Milan took the top spot, retired player Antonio Di Natale, now 42, was the league’s top scorer, Samuel Eto’o was an Internazionale player, Edinson Cavani was still in Napoli, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was in AC Milan, before his whole MLS adventure in LA Galaxy, and Robinho was still a thing. Along with Zlatan, some other legends were still playing with AC Milan back in those days, and helped get their last championship, such as Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso, Fillipo Inzaghi and none other than Ronaldinho Gaucho, among others.

After that season, Juventus stepped on the gas and hasn’t let go ever since, winning the next 8 tournaments in a row, with little real competition.

How are things right now in the 2019-2020 Serie A season

After 26games played so far, Juventus is on top of the table again; however, the lead is of 1 point only, with 63 in total, over Lazio’s 62. Juve have won 20 of their 26 games, tied 3 and lost 3, scoring a total of 50 goals, and allowing 24. Lazio, who have had a magnificent second half of the season, lead the league in goals scored, with 60, and also in goals against, with just 23. When the season resumes, this will be a race not to miss, because Lazio definitely want to make the most of this chance to end Juventus’ long winning streak.

Next in the table, in third place, we find Inter Milan, with 54 points, and then Atalanta with 48. Remember, the first four spots will go ahead and play in UEFA Champions League next year, while the next two, which are AS Roma, with 45 points, and Napoli, with 39, will play in UEFA Europa League. AC Milan is now being left behind, in seventh spot, with only 36 points, and would be missing the chance to play in continental tournaments next season, if the tournament ended today, at least.

More numbers for the 2019-2020 Serie A season

Ciro Immobile, Lazio’s main striker, leads the league in goals scored, with 27, while Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo is second in this race so far, with 21. Belgian international, Romelu Lukaku, former Manchester United player, now with Internazionale, ranks third in the list, with 17 goals scored. Another Lazio player, Luis Alberto, leads the Italian league in assists so far, with 12.
