Serena Williams Vs. Simona Halep

Serena Williams has amassed an impressive 23 Grand Slam singles titles, one more and she will tie Margaret Courtís record of 24.

On Saturday she will get one more chance to tie the elusive record. She beat Barbora Strycova in the semifinals 6-1, 6-2 to advance to what will be her 11th Wimbledon Final.

Her opponent on Saturdayís match will be Simona Halep from Romania. Halep is currently ranked #7 by the WTA. She earned her pass to the finals earlier today by quickly dispatching Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-1, 6-3 in a match that lasted 59 minutes.

Veteran vs. Newcomer

At 37 Serena Williams doesnít show the telltale signs of a player who is ready to retire. On the contrary, in the 16 months since her return to the world of professional tennis, she has gotten stronger, and with 7 Wimbledon titles under her belt, she is one tough opponent.

Halep is ten years younger than Serena and is fighting for her first ever Wimbledon title. Normally we would say age can be a defining factor in these types of matches, but age doesnít seem to affect Williams the way it does most other humans.

To play successfully against Serena, you need both physical and mental strength. Halep seems to have turned a corner and now looks more confident than ever.

The Romanian favors clay courts and has had trouble on the grass in the past. However, over the last couple of years, she has worked hard to improve her performance on every surface, including grass, which requires far different footwork than clay.

To improve her game on grass, she has drilled drop shots and slices, but she also added a punch to her serve.

Who Will Win?

Serena is likely to be the favorite when www.AcePerHead.com, the best pay per head site, posts their betting lines for the Wimbledonís Women Final.

Both Williams and Halep have played exceptionally well in this tournament and especially in their semifinal matches.

Williams is 9-1 against Halep, and the one victory the Romanian has was not on grass. We cannot deny Halep has improved her game on grass surface courts, but she is still finding her footing, and with so much pressure we must wonder if she really has a chance to beat Serena on Saturday.

We mentioned that Halep had added a punch to her serve; however, Williamís penetrating return, which proved lethal against Strycova, will make it hard for Halep to defend her serve.

Serena is a strong player, both physically and mentally, but she is not undefeatable. We saw her struggle in a few of her earlier matches, most notably against Kaja Juvan in the second round and Alison Riske in the Quarterfinals.

Williams has also struggled to keep her composure on the big stage lately. If Halep can hold her serve and somehow manage to pick Serenaís serve early, then she might disrupt the Americanís game enough to have a chance to walk away with the title. But letís face it, those are a lot of ifs.

Prediction:

Serena Williams in 3 sets.
