The Cardinals are 4-2 in this series over the last six.

Team Power Rankings

per TheRinger.com:

St. Louis Cardinals (No. 14)

"The Cardinals would claim a playoff spot if the season ended today, but it’s difficult to envision them finishing that way given their negative-38 run differential. Veterans Nolan Arenado (101 wRC+) and Paul Goldschmidt (90) aren’t hitting. Nor are promising youngsters Lars Nootbaar (104) and Nolan Gorman (95). Offseason additions Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn have helped stabilize St. Louis’s rotation, but the Cardinals will need to work more magic to keep pace in the wild-card race. Perhaps their greatest reason for belief is that all of their closest competitors have plenty of flaws, as well."

per MLB.com:

Pittsburgh Pirates (No. 18)

"The Pirates’ young pitching gives this whole organization a North Star for the next few seasons, even if it’s a little early to start getting fired up too much about investing everything in the right now. The real question: How long do we get to watch Paul Skenes every fifth day?"

Cardinals Pitching

Kyle Gibson

Kyle Gibson is 7-3 with a 4.16 ERA.   The Pirates are .231 against him.

Gibson is without a win in his last two starts despite allowing just one run over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Braves his most recent start.

Sonny Gray

Sonny Gray (9–6, 3.34 ERA)

These Pirates are just .226 against Gray, who lost his last start after permitting three wins against n seven innings.  He has not had a win in his last three starts.

Expect Gray to be on his A-Game assuming he faces the Pirates in this series, which he likely will.

Lance Lynn

Lance Lynn (5-4, 4.39 ERA)

In 104 at bats. These Pirates have only a hit 24 off of Lynn with a mere 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.

Lance Lynn allowed two runs with six strikeouts over six innings in a win over the Cubs his last start.  He lost his previous start.

Lynn has won in two consecutive starts once this season.

Pittsburgh Starting Pitching

Paul Skenes

Paul Skenes (6-0, 1.90 ERA)

Paul Skenes fired a scoreless inning during Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game at Globe Life Field.

Skenes lived up to the astronomical hype with an impressive frame during his Midsummer Classic debut.

Mitch Keller

Mitch Keller (10-5, 3.56 ERA)

The Cardinals are .276 against Keller.

Keller lasted just three innings on Sunday against the White Sox. He allowed two earned runs, walked three, and struck out three in a no-decision.

His command was more erratic than usual.  This start ended a streak of 49 consecutive starts by Keller where he pitched at least five innings.

Wilson Contreras is 6 for 17 against Keller but most of those that have hit good against him have not had much success against Keller.
