  • Seth Lugo is coming off a bad loss and it is rare for him to go two straight losing starts.
  • Kansas City is a -155 favorite in this one.

Find all of the top picks and analyses for today's games.  This is Capper's Central for August 1, 2024.

Most Top Cappers on Cubs

Chicago Cubs career statistics vs. Sonny Gray are .252 against Cards starter Sonny Gray.

Ian Happ has 5 RBIs against him out of 16 at bats.

Gray gave up five runs in five innings Friday in a no-decision against the Nationals.  He had a win in his previous start. He also has a bloated ERA on the road.

Shota Imanaga is 8-2 with a 2.95 ERA.  Imanaga allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings and got a no-decision in the Cubs’ 9-4 victory over the Royals on Saturday.  He hasn't had a win over his last two starts.

The Cubs' starter has been reliable at Wrigley (.226 opponent BA) and has held his last five opponents to three or fewer runs.

Cubs are -120 and we are liking them here.

Orioles @ Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians have won six of their last eight games while Baltimore has won five of their last eight.

There is no significant edge in this series.

There was no listed pitcher for the Orioles as of early Thursday morning.

Ben Lively has limited experience versus this Baltimore roster.

Royals @ Tigers

KC has won four of six against Detroit this season.

Keider Montero will start for Detroit.

Seth Lugo allowed six runs in 6 1/3 innings and took the loss against the Cubs on Saturday.  Lugo has only had two losses in a row once.  That was recently. He's only gone two times with two straight starts without a win.

Montero struggled in a losing effort against the Twins on Friday evening, surrendering six runs (five earned) on eight hits over his five innings of work.   He allowed five runs in his prior start.

Lugo has been good at getting the Royals into late innings.

Tigers manager AJ Hinch admits there are rotation issues coming into this series.

“We’ve been targeting the off day (Wednesday) for a couple of weeks,” Hinch said after the Guardians swept the two-game series with a 5-0 win over the Tigers at Comerica Park Tuesday. “I want to know who and what is going off after today. We’ve got to get through today (trade deadline) before we can reset and know what it is, where our pitching is and what the roles are.

“For the Kansas City series, we’ll be able to reset.”

The Tigers have won just three of their last ten games after enjoying a bit of a strong stretch while KC is winning 50% of their games of late.

We do like KC here even at a somewhat pricey -160.

Since we initially posted in the morning hours that we were one of the first to back the Royals, nearly a dozen cappers on the G911 Sports Hub have now backed KC.  It's a full consenus as nobody was on the Tigers.
