A collection of Major League Baseball’s best will be showcased on Tuesday in the annual All-Star Game. Though the Midsummer Classic is an exhibition game, the American League has had the better of their counterparts from the senior circuit recently winning the last six games and 18 of the previous 21 games that declared a winner. We all remember that 2002 fiasco in Milwaukee that ended in a tie. But I digress.

The game started to lose some of its appeal with stars from both league’s electing not to play and little excitement on the field. The leagues bucked a trend of low scoring games by combining for 14 runs in last year’s 8-6 AL victory, Only one game in the past 21 produced more runs, that coming at Coors Field in 1998 in the AL’s 13-8 win. National League

Trying to win the game while making sure a majority if not all the players get in the game is a balancing act for the managers. At least Dave Roberts has some experience after leading the NL last season. The Dodgers leader also has a stacked roster as the senior circuit looks to put the losing streak in the rearview.

Christian Yelich and Cody Bellinger are the front runners for NL MVP at the halfway point and both are starting for the youngest NL club ever. Yelich bowed out of the home run derby due to injury but elected to play in the game. He leads MLB with 31 home runs. Bellinger and Pete Alonso, who won an epic home run derby with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., each have 30 homers on the season. Toss in the likes of Josh Bell, Javier Baez, Nolan Arenado and Freddie Freeman, and the NL has plenty of pop.

However, the strength of Roberts’ group is pitching and he knows a number of players first hand. That’s because starter Ryu, Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler all work with him in Los Angeles. Ryu has been dominant this year with a MLB best 1.73 ERA across 17 starts. Kershaw is, well, Kershaw, and Buehler has nasty stuff. Jacob deGrom and Mike Soroka can handle the middle innings leaving two of the top closers in the game to finish it off. Kirby Yates has 30 saves and a 1.15 ERA and Will Smith is 23 for 23 in save chances with a 1.98 ERA.

American League

There is no shortage of talent on the AL side, and most of it comes from the Astros and Yankees. But arguably the best player in the game is Mike Trout, and he has a way of putting up huge performances on the All-Star stage. A recent power surge has lifted Trout to the top of the AL with 28 dingers and 67 RBIs, and we saw him take home MVP honors in 2014 and 2015. Gary Sanchez (24) and Alex Bregman (23) are also among the top-5 in AL home runs.

Verlander makes his second ASG start after putting together a stellar first half for the first-place Astros. Teammate Gerrit Cole and Lucas Giolito are likely next in line with AL saves leaders Aroldis Chapman and Brad Hand waiting in the wings. There is some drop off from the starters to the reserves and the bullpen isn’t as strong, at least numbers-wise, than the NL and that’s likely the difference between winning and losing.

The NLers know exactly what’s going on, and while this is only an exhibition there is plenty of pride on the field. Losing six consecutive games doesn’t sit well with them and you can bet Dave Roberts is tired of losing to the American League. The NL side is stacked and I have to give the pitching edge to the senior circuit. The AL needs to keep the score down for a better chance at winning and to bridge the gap to its closers. However, I like the NL reserves to play a significant role with an advantage after the starters exit the game. And with the amount of power on both sides, at least one pitcher is going to give it up.

MLB All Star Game Score Prediction: National League 6, American League 4
