Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Tigers Odds to Win the 2012 World Series

With Major League Baseball about to begin Wednesday here in the US, Gambling911.com will take a look at the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies and Tigers odds to win the 2012 World Series.  Each of these teams are listed with single digit odds at WagerWeb.com with the Yankees always a perennial favorite.

Michael Pineda of Athlon Sports believes the Yankees certainly have what it takes to make a World Series run later this year.

A deep lineup returns, and so does ace lefty CC Sabathia, who fronts a rotation fortified by the additions of veteran Hiroki Kuroda and 23-year-old All-Star Michael Pineda. With those arms, all those hitters, a stingy bullpen, and the money and prospects to have plenty of trade options, the Yankees are poised for another turn in October.

New York pays slightly better than 5/1 odds.

The Red Sox typically open with single digit odds each year. 2012 is no exception with the Sox opening at 7/1 despite all the turmoil and controversy facing this team after last year’s season ending meltdown and the departure of their GM.

“It is indeed surprising they open with such short odds all things considered,” notes Gambling911.com’s Don Shapiro.  “The Red Sox have been selected to finish third in the AL by a number of experts.”

Rick Freeman of the New Jersey Times we take it doesn’t see much value in the Phillies coming in as the favorite to win the 2012 World Series at +350.

The Phillies are old and battered, and the rest of the division is starting to catch up. The injuries to Howard and Utley are a big concern, and Polanco has had health issues this spring as well. Who knows if Rollins will hold up? As long as the pitching stays on line, the Phils should be able to manage. But at some point, runs have to be scored, and an awful lot is expected from Pence and Mayberry in what looks to be a very thin lineup.

Another team with single digit odds to win the 2012 World Series are the Detroit Tigers.  They will pay just over $600 for every $100 bet with a championship win.  Rick Porcello of Athlon writes:

With the White Sox rebuilding, the Twins reloading and the Indians trying to sustain the progress they made in 2011, the up-and-coming Royals may be Detroit’s chief challenger in 2012. But the Tigers don’t appear overly worried.  Manager Jim Leyland is confidant he will find a spot in the lineup for his prized free agent, perennial MVP candidate Miguel Cabrera and the defensively challenged Delmon Young.  With (Prince) Fielder and Cabrera in the middle of the lineup, the Tigers are quite certainly the best team yet again in the Central — where there is not even an obvious challenger to their supremacy.
