Braden Smith (PUR) was coming in with an over/under 15.5 point scored total for Thursday's Sweet 16 game between Texas and Purdue.

Smith closed Friday's 104-71 victory over Queens University with 26 points (10-15 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT), three rebounds and eight assists in 32 minutes.

From Rotowire

Smith entered this game just one assist shy of Bobby Hurley's all-time NCAA-leading mark, so the record-breaking pass was essentially a foregone conclusion. The pivotal pass came at 12:11 in the first half on a bounce pass to Trey Kaufman-Renn, who also drew the foul and and-one opportunity. With the record in hand, Smith and the Boilermakers now draw Miami on Sunday with a spot in the Sweet Sixteen on the line.

“We know Texas is going to be a tough match,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter said. “Very good across the board. Very athletic, very long, tough. Sean’s [Sean Miller] teams always defend, rebound, and they’re obviously playing their best basketball. A little similar to us at the end of the year where we had some losses, they’ve had some losses, but I think you can magnify a lot of different things. They’ve played better here in the tournament. We’ve played better. We’ve both defended better than we did in those stretches, and I think that’s what it’s all about, is how you’re playing right now and how you’ve got to be able to just to push forward. But excited about the challenge. We know this is going to be a very, very difficult game.

“Obviously they’re a very talented group,” Smith said. “Obviously they’ve got a lot of guys in there that have played high-level basketball for a long time and continue to do so and are really good players, and we have that understanding.”
